Vice President Development Richard Smith

Richard A. Smith, Ed.D., joined FMC as the vice president of Development in January 2008. Smith’s primary duties will be overseeing the fund-raising and granting processes for FMC including planning and implementing fund-raising activities, annual and major giving, capital development and donor recognition; and overseeing volunteer services at FMC.

Smith has more than 20 years experience in higher education administrative roles including serving as the vice president of University Advancement at Boise State University, Idaho; and Wichita State University, Kansas. Smith also served as the national executive director for American Youth Soccer Organization.

Originally from Southern California, Smith moved to Flagstaff in the late 1960s. He earned his bachelor’s in Physical Education and English, a master’s in Physical Education Administration, a secondary Principal/Superintendent certificate and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, all from Northern Arizona University (NAU).

While working as the Athletic Department administrator at NAU in the 1990s, Smith founded NAU’s High Altitude Training Center – training mulitple Olympic and elite athletes annually. In addition to his administrative roles, Smith was a football coach at NAU
