Flagstaff Medical Center awards $6,000+ in nursing scholarships

May 21, 2012

Flagstaff Medical Center recently awarded $6,000 in nursing education scholarships through the FMC Foundation’s annual Nursing Scholarship Awards program. The Nursing Scholarship Awards program is in its 20th year at FMC with 112 scholarships totaling more than $100,000 awarded since its inception.

Bill Bradel, FMC President and CEO, and his wife Shannon, R.N., underwrite the scholarships. The Bradels have made a financial commitment to the Nursing Scholarship Awards program for several years. Last year the program was renamed The Bill and Shannon Bradel Nursing Scholarships.

“Nursing is the very foundation of patient care,” Bradel said. “We are honored to be part of the future of healthcare and nursing by supporting the continuing education of nurses and those enrolling in nursing programs. Since Shannon is a nurse and I am a hospital administrator, we are both very aware of the valuable role nurses have in providing excellent care to our patients and we believe investing in the education of our nurses is paramount.”

To be eligible for a scholarship award, applicants must be current employees of FMC or one of its affiliates, and are required to be enrolled or accepted into a pre-nursing, nursing or advance-nursing degree program as of July 1, 2012. Scholarship recipients were:

  • Iris Maczura, R.N., Surgical Services - $500
  • Michelle Montanez, P.C.T., Med/Surg - $1,000
