Guardian Medical Transport is celebrating its 25-year anniversary. A division of Flagstaff Medical Center, Guardian Medical Transport (GMT) serves more than 6,200 square miles in Northern Arizona – from Happy Jack to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. GMT is dedicated to providing prompt pre-hospital emergency medical services and non-emergent transport 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
With a fleet of 14 four-wheel drive ambulances, GMT responds to the 911 system from three bases within Flagstaff city limits, and since May 2000 a crew and ambulance has been stationed in Tusayan, at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. On average, GMT responds to more than 14,000 calls for service including emergent and non-emergent patient transport, educational demonstrations and stand-by support at public events every year. Additionally, GMT staff donates more than 4,000 community service hours each year.
Often referred to as a mobile emergency room, each ambulance is staffed with a minimum of one paramedic and one emergency medical technician (EMT). The two-person crew provides basic life support and advanced cardiac life support services using state-of-the-art medical equipment. Under the direction of an attending FMC physician, crew members are cross-trained to provide specialty care for adult, pediatric and cardiac patients. Standard medical equipment includes advanced airway and trauma, spinal immobilization and each unit and screw are equipped to handle injuries from minor to serious to trauma.
In addition to its 14 ambulances, GMT operates a state-of-the-art battalion chief vehicle, a communication center with its own dispatchers and a public education "Monster Ambulance." GMT's paramedic Bike Team is available for special community events where paramedics are needed to standby for emergency response at crowded venues.
GMT was purchased from Flagstaff Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) 25 years ago. Before it was FEMS, the ambulance company was owned by Rural Metro. When Flagstaff Medical Center purchased FEMS and created GMT, the service had three ambulances and 12 crew members. Today, GMT employs approximately 100 staff including a director, supervisor, three battalion chiefs and five captains.
