Flagstaff Medical Center and Heart & Vascular Center add accomplished heart surgeon to staff
Cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon David Caparrelli, M.D., F.A.C.S, will join Flagstaff Medical Center and The Heart & Vascular Center of Northern Arizona (HVCNA) on Oct. 16. Dr. Caparrelli, who is board certified in cardiothoracic, vascular and general surgery, was selected following a national search that included dozens of applicants.
As a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, Dr. Caparrelli specializes in minimally invasive and traditional open heart surgery, including coronary artery bypass, valve repair and replacement, removal of intracardiac tumors and repair of heart defects. He also maintains a special interest and expertise in the treatment of patients with aneurysms and peripheral vascular disease utilizing both traditional open and innovative endovascular techniques.

Before joining FMC and HVCNA, Dr. Caparrelli was a cardiovascular and endovascular surgeon at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix. He received an undergraduate chemistry degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he spent an additional year as a post-doctoral research fellow in thoracic oncology. He completed his general, vascular and cardiothoracic surgical residencies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md. During his tenure at Johns Hopkins he served as the chief resident of the cardiac and thoracic surgery divisions.
Dr. Caparrelli has published numerous articles related to cardiovascular medicine and is an accomplished speaker on cardiac topics. He currently is a counselor-at-large and the co-chairman of the fellowship committee for the Edward B. Diethrich Vascular Surgical Society. He is a member of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists, the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, the Edward B. Diethrich Vascular Surgical Society and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
