Neurosurgeon Nate Avery, M.D., Killed in Accident
Hospital/Community Feel Loss

It is with a deep sense of sadness we inform you that Nathan Avery, M.D., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 18, following an accident at Lake Powell. Our heartfelt prayers go out to his family and friends.

A Flagstaff native, Dr. Avery returned to his hometown in July 2001 after 12 years of medical training as a neurosurgeon.

“Dr. Avery was an exceptional physician who was well-respected for his knowledge and expertise, including his work as a trauma and pediatric neurosurgeon. His death is a true loss to all of us at Flagstaff Medical Center, and to the entire community,” said FMC President Bill Bradel.

“With his training and credentials, Dr. Avery could have practiced anywhere, but he chose to return home to raise his family and care for his friends and neighbors.”

A graduate of Flagstaff High School and Northern Arizona University, Dr. Avery attended medical school at the University of Arizona. His advanced training included a residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and a prestigious fellowship at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
