The Kresge Foundation recently awarded a $750,000 grant to North Country HealthCare for the Hermosa Vida – beautiful life – project. North Country HealthCare, Fit Kids of Arizona, Killip Elementary School and many other community partners have teamed up to develop the three-year program. The program is focused on promoting healthy lifestyles and improving the long-term health of children and their parents in the Sunnyside neighborhood.
Fit Kids will use grant funds to offer weekly clinical services at Killip Elementary. Fit Kids staff will be at the school every Thursday afternoon from 3 – 6 p.m., providing medical, nutritional and behavioral education as well as activity programs for kids and their families to participate in. The program is open to all families with a child currently enrolled at Killip Elementary. To make an appointment with Fit Kids at the school, call 214-3537.
“Fit Kids is dedicated to improving the health of the community,” said Matt Leversee, Fit Kids manager. “Being able to offer our services and expertise for an extended period of time to a group of students and their parents is a big step forward. This program at Killip is just another way we are working to positively impact the health of our community.”
Fit Kids of Arizona began in January 2009 with the goal of decreasing childhood obesity and promoting healthy lifestyles for kids and their families. Since that time more than 680 children have been referred to the program at Flagstaff Medical Center, and more than 300 children have been referred to the program at Verde Valley Medical Center. The Fit Kids team is made up of medical, nutritional, fitness and behavioral experts who work with participants and family members to identify concerns and problem-areas, and assist in setting goals for healthy lifestyle improvement.
