Flagstaff Medical Center recently awarded $6,000 in nursing education scholarships through the FMC Foundation’s annual Nursing Scholarship Awards program. The Nursing Scholarship Awards program is in its 19th year at FMC with 104 scholarships totaling more than $100,000 awarded since its inception.
This year, the scholarships were underwritten by Bill Bradel, FMC President and CEO, and his wife Shannon. In addition to this year’s generous donation, the Bradels have made a financial commitment to the Nursing Scholarship Awards program for several years. As of this year, the program will be named The Bill and Shannon Bradel Nursing Scholarships.
“Nursing is the very foundation of patient care,” Bradel said. “We are honored to be part of the future of healthcare and nursing by supporting the continuing education of nurses and those enrolling in a nursing program. Since Shannon is a nurse and I am a hospital administrator, we are both very aware of the valuable role nurses have in providing excellent care to our patients, and we believe investing in the education of our nurses is paramount.”
To be eligible for a scholarship award, applicants must be a current employee of FMC or one of its affiliates, and are required to be enrolled or accepted into a pre-nursing, nursing or advance-nursing degree program as of July 1, 2011.
Four $1,000 scholarships and four $500 scholarships were awarded. Recipients of the $1,000 scholarships were Janet Nicks, Tess Ledvina, Meara Scheuler and Taye Nelson. Recipients of the $500 scholarships were Kara Cummings, Michelle Montanez, Jill Dubravic and Iris MacZura.
In addition to the FMC Nursing Scholarship Awards, the Arizona High Country Chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses awarded $500 scholarships to FMC employees Janet Nicks and Iris MacZura. An additional $500 scholarship was awarded to a student enrolled in the nursing program at Coconino Community College.
