Fit Kids of Arizona’s Sara Pinson, receives 2012 Young Dietitian of the Year award

May 25, 2012

Sara Pinson, R.D., a registered dietitian at Fit Kids of Arizona, recently was awarded the 2012 Young Dietitian of the Year award for Arizona from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  The award was given in recognition of her contributions to children and families through her work with the Fit Kids of Arizona program, which helps children and their families overcome childhood obesity and live healthy lifestyles.

A registered dietitian under the age of 35, she was recognized as an exceptional young dietitian by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She was chosen for her demonstrated concern for and the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the community and for her leadership in the work environment.

Pinson has served as dietitian with Fit Kids of Arizona for more than three years. Her primary role is to work one-on-one with participants and their family to identify nutrition and dietary concerns and problem-areas, and then guide them in setting goals for improvement. She doesn’t focus on helping participants lose weight, rather, the focus is on making healthy food choices.
Pinson completed her dietetic internship in Salem, Ore. Prior to her employment at Fit Kids, Pinson was the dietitian for the San Carlos Apache Tribal Diabetes Prevention Program/Weight Management Program in San Carlos, Ariz.

Fit Kids of Arizona is a regional community health initiative developed by Northern Arizona Healthcare, with programs at Verde Valley Medical Center and Flagstaff Medical Center, addressing the very common health concern of obesity in children. Additionally, services are offered in Camp Verde, at Killip Elementary School in Flagstaff, and plans are underway to open a clinic in Williams. The clinical programs at each location assist children and their families in developing healthy lifestyles while reducing the problems and illnesses associated with excess weight. The Fit Kids team takes a preventive community approach to help families live healthier lives. Since opening in 2009, more than 1,100 children have been referred to Fit Kids, resulting in nearly 2,000 clinic visits in the Flagstaff location and 1,400 clinic visits in the Verde Valley Location.
