I have always loved to cook and food has always been a central part of my life, my family and my culture. However, my love for food almost killed me. At the age of 45, I weighed 387 pounds.Type 2 diabetes was having a negative effect on the way Michael Smith lived his life. After extensive research, Smith decided bariatric, or weight-loss surgery, was the best way to ensure his well-being.Prior to weight-loss surgery in August 2006, I had been overweight my entire life. I was the “chubby kid” who never got picked for games. I was the “fat girl” who never got asked out on dates. My teen-age years were torturous.
