HIV/AIDS - Shándíín Project

The Shándíín Project (Shándíín is the Navajo word for "Sun Ray") offers HIV/AIDS medical care, prevention education and community outreach.

It is the only program in Northern Arizona offering this specialized medical care.

In cooperation with Mark Lacy, M.D., medical director, the Shándíín Project provides access to high-quality, multidisciplinary and culturally sensitive HIV/AIDS care and education for Northern Arizona residents. 

Dr. Lacy is the only board-certified physician in Northern Arizona with fellowship training in infectious disease and HIV/AIDS. 

The Shándíín Project:

  • Confirms HIV/AIDS diagnosis
  • Provides treatment for HIV/AIDS patients 
  • Helps facilitate care needs such as laboratory work and immunizations
  • Provides education concerning HIV/AIDS, treatment, health maintenance and prevention of related illnesses
  • Acts as a liaison between the patient and other organizations for treatment
  • Connects patients with community resources such as support groups and financial assistance
  • Offers additional services including infectious disease consultations and international travel medicine consultations

HIV/AIDS Facts and Statistics:

  • There are more than 950,000 persons infected with HIV in the U.S; one-third of them don’t know they’re infected
  • There may be up to 1,000 people with HIV in Northern Arizona
  • Minority women account for more than 80 percent of AIDS cases in U.S. women
  • HIV/AIDS is a treatable disease
