Surgical Services
 The Surgical Services Department utilizes a wide range of technological equipment that enables physicians to perform state-of-the-art surgical procedures. Surgical Services has 11 operating rooms including dedicated open heart, daVinci surgical robot and total joint replacement surgical suites. Surgical Services also has pre- and post-anesthesia units in close proximity to the operating rooms, and is near the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Units.
More than 600 surgeries are performed each month with the majority of the cases being orthopedic, neurosurgery and general surgery. Our team provides consultative and definitive care services on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The goal of the department is to provide a high standard of care for the patient and the family. Emergency surgical care is available
24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Surgical Services
- Cardiovascular: The treatment of heart and vascular disease; sometimes referred to as "open heart"
- Endoscopy: Used to diagnosis and treat digestive diseases, the liver, the esophagus, the colon and the lungs
- General surgery: Includes respiratory, digestive, weight loss and vascular
- Laparoscopy: A diagnostic aid or a minimally invasive surgery that is used in abdominal and gynecological surgery
- Neurosurgery: Spine and skull surgical procedures
- Ophthalmology: Surgical procedures related to the eyes
- Orthopedics: Procedures involving injury or disease to the bones or joints including total joint replacement
- Otolaryngology: Ear, nose and throat procedures
- Pediatric: General procedures, orthopedic and neurosurgery
- Plastic: Reconstructive surgery
- Thoracic: Chest procedures, especially lung and esophageal diseases
- Trauma: Head, spinal, chest, abdominal and orthpedic injuries
- Urology: Specializing in kidney, urinary system and prostate procedures
- Vascular: Diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel disease, repair and injury
Specialized Medical Equipment
- The da Vinci Surgical System is state-of-the-art robotic technology. FMC is the only hospital in Northern and Central Arizona to offer this advanced, minimally invasive surgical technology. The system enhances a surgeon’s capabilities by combining three-dimensional, high-definition robotics to extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands deep into the surgical field through small, precise movements. The system allows complex surgeries to be less invasive because the surgery is performed through tiny incisions, rather than through large, open incisions.
- Image-Guided Surgery: Computerized procedures that merge radiology images taken before and during surgery to help surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures in neurosurgery; orthopedic and joint replacement surgery; and ear, nose and throat procedures.
- CO2 Laser is used in ear, nose and throat and gynecological surgery
Professional Care
- FMC contracts with local physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists
- Specially trained staff certifications include registered nurses (R.N), Certified Nurse in the Operating Room (C.N.O.R.), Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (C.P.A.N.), and Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (S.G.N.A.)
Public Education
- Surgical Services sponsors “A Day in the OR” for local high school students. Once a year, the Flagstaff chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses invites students into the operating room to introduce them to a career in medicine. Students are able to interact with nurses and physicians, as well as gain hands-on experience with the surgical equipment.
