Holistic Nursing Seminar |
Holistic nursing seminar offered
at FMC Northern Arizona Healthcare (NAH) and Flagstaff Medical Center are offering a full-day seminar on Holistic Nursing. The seminar has been designed to introduce participants to the foundations of holism and holistic nursing. Holistic nursing is defined as “any nursing practice that has ‘healing the whole person’ as its goal.” The practice draws on nursing knowledge, theories, expertise and intuition to guide nurses in becoming therapeutic partners with people in their care. This practice recognizes the totality of the human being - the interconnectedness of body, mind and spirit. Holistic nursing recently was recognized by the American Nurses Association as a “specialty practice,” with a defined scope and standards of practice. The seminar will be presented by Susan B. Collins, M.ed, MSN., RN, C/FNP, HNC, past president of the American Holistic Nurses Association and past chief operating officer of North Country HealthCare. Collins currently is a family nurse practitioner at North Country HealthCare, in Flagstaff. The seminar is free to NAH employees, and is $75 for community members. |

The American Cancer Society at |
Cancer Survivors’ Retreat |
Each year, the Cancer
Center at Flagstaff Medical Center, the Cancer Center at Sedona, the Grand
Canyon Oncology Nursing Society and the local American Cancer Society,
cosponsor the three-day Northern Arizona Upbeat Retreat. This event provides fun recreation, networking and educational opportunities in a supported retreat setting for women who are cancer patients or cancer survivors. The American Cancer Society started the Upbeat Retreat 21 years ago in Maricopa County. The program was so popular with local women that it filled rapidly and as a result, branched out to the Tucson area and nine years ago to Northern Arizona. The retreat is held in Payson, at the R-C Boy Scout Ranch, located in the Ponderosa pines on the Mogollon Rim. The atmosphere is camp-like, and the participants sleep in heated cabins. The main log cabin lodge is enormous, with a full restaurant-style kitchen and gigantic stone fireplace. A variety of recreational and educational activities, including hiking, arts and crafts, games, massages and presentations by community members, will be provided. The goal is to provide a fun, nurturing and educational experience for all women with cancer, those who are newly diagnosed and long-term survivors. At the beginning of the retreat, the stage is set for each participant to identify exactly what she wants out of the retreat. This could mean attending all the workshops, catching up on sleep, spending some quiet time or making new friends. |
